The Independent Media Commission (IMC) on 1st May 2026 successfully
supervised and facilitated the formation of the Board of Directors of Radio
Mankneh 96.1 FM in Bombali District.
Established in 1994, Radio Mankneh remains one of the oldest and most respected
community radio stations in Sierra Leone, playing a critical role in community
development, public education, peace building, and information dissemination.
The event brought together major media stakeholders and community
representatives including the Independent Radio Network (IRN), the Sierra Leone
Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the Sierra Leone Broadcasters Association
(SiLBA), Paramount Chiefs, civil society organizations, youth and women’s
groups, and other community stakeholders.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Khalil Kallon emphasized that the formation of the
new board is part of the IMC’s governance framework aimed at restoring and
strengthening community ownership of community radio stations across Sierra
Leone.
He noted that community radio should remain “for the people, by the people, and
of the people,” while calling on all stakeholders to support Radio Mankneh in
fulfilling its mandate for the development of Bombali District.
The IMC remains committed to promoting accountability, transparency,
sustainability, and inclusive governance within the media sector as part of efforts
to strengthen democratic participation and access to information across Sierra
Leone.
We congratulate the newly formed Board of Directors of Radio Mankneh and
encourage continued community support toward the growth and sustainability of
the station.
